In memory of Willa Browning
Chambers
1926-1994
Willa Browing Chambers was born January 15, 1926, the sixth of seven children
of J. Frank and May Williams Browning. She grew up in the mountains of Garrett
County in western Maryland. During World War II, she moved to Washington,
D.C., where she worked in the newly developing field of automated data processing.
She married Jay Chambers in 1951. They raised two children, Ann Marie and
Carol Louise. Throughout her life she continued working with computers in
the data processing field.
In 1970, the Chambers moved to Williamsburg, Virginia and lived there until retirement. Willa worked for the College of William and Mary, becoming Assistant Director of Institutional Research. After retirement, Jay and Willa built their Fairfield, Virginia home to enjoy the mountains and community.
Willa was an active member of the Timber Ridge Presbyterian Church. She was elected Elder for the Class of 1996 and served as Co-chair of the Witness and Service Committee. She was active in promoting the church's support for Habitat for Humanity.
Willa was an award-winning photographer whose interest in photography further developed after moving to Rockbridge County. She was accepted as a member of Artists in Cahoots, a local artist's cooperative. Her photographs represent her diverse interests, her appreciation of beauty and whimsy.
Throughout her life time she was an avid gardener. The photograph of red geraniums is one of her award-winning multiple exposure photographs.
